Foundations | Cimientos
Foundations | Cimientos is a video based on the personal experience of losing the childhood home in a natural disaster. Drawing from this experience, the work questions the relationship between home, belonging, memory, and grief, exploring how the disappearance of a physical space impacts both personal and collective identity.
In the video, the artist engages intimately with the act of building and rebuilding, symbolically embodying the foundations of a house. The various actions and gestures depicted evoke, in an almost dreamlike manner, the impossible desire to recover the lost home, to reclaim memories, or to become part of something that no longer exists. The visual narrative unfolds in a constant dialogue between the presence of the body and the materiality of construction elements such as cement blocks, wooden planks—all of which directly reference architecture, construction, and plants referring to a lost garden.
The project draws on theoretical references such as The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard, which explores the house as a container of memory, as well as research on place attachment and territorial identity. Foundations | Cimientos seeks to spark a conversation about the fragility of home and identity, confronting the viewer with the uncertainty of losing a vital space and the necessity of reconstructing it through memory and absence.
